What kind of messages was Disney actually promoting? I began to see that underlying many of the seemingly light-hearted Disney movie plots there existed themes promoting certain behaviors and stereotypes. However, as I developed a more critical approach to interpreting the world around me my optimistic perceptions about Disney started to change. I thought Disney movies were riddled with encouraging messages and charming characters. At first, it was difficult for me to see Disney in anything but a positive light. Now that I am older, I am more aware of Disney’s overarching presence, power, and influence. Even my 87-year-old Nana has an attachment to Disney Snow White was the first movie she ever saw in theatres. My parents, siblings, and friends are all very fond of Disney.

When I played with my friends, we pretended to be Disney princesses. As a child, my room was decorated with stuffed animals and pictures from some of my favorite Disney movies, including: The Lion King, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo. I can’t help but feel such a strong attachment to it. After all, I grew up in a Disney culture. Mostly, I become nostalgic for times of innocence and childhood.Ĭall me sentimental, but I think that having these associations with Disney is completely normal for someone from my generation. I feel an overwhelming sense of security in knowing that, despite challenging circumstances and against all odds, good always conquers evil. I giggle and reminisce about the more comical Disney characters, like Mushu from Mulan. I am comforted by feelings of friendship, chivalry, and kindness. The inspiring melody of “ When You Wish upon a Star” from Pinocchio echoes in my head. When you hear the word ‘Disney’, what do you think about? For me, images of beautiful princesses and fairytales flood my mind.
